Community Workshop to Build a Better Energy Future

From June 30 to July 2, Grand Portage community members are invited to help shape the future of energy on the reservation—no technical knowledge required.

The Tribal Voices, Energy Sovereignty Workshop is a three-day event designed to gather meaningful community input on what matters most when it comes to energy: cost, reliability, sustainability, and local control. Organized by Grand Portage Trust Lands, the workshop will help build a vision for Tribal energy sovereignty.

The current energy system has long posed challenges, from frequent outages to aging infrastructure. This workshop is a chance for residents to share how these issues have impacted their lives, learn about practical solutions, and help decide what kind of energy system Grand Portage should build for the future.

The format is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or expertise.

Day 1 focuses on community stories and lived experiences with energy issues.

Day 2 introduces energy basics—like solar, wind, and microgrids—through presentations from experts.

Day 3 brings participants together to identify shared goals and plan next steps.

Feedback from the workshop will directly influence the Tribal Strategic Energy Plan and guide future infrastructure, funding opportunities, and job creation. Whether it’s forming a Tribal utility, investing in renewables, or improving reliability, the path forward will reflect the priorities of the people who live here.

Everyone is encouraged to attend—elders, youth, longtime residents, and those just beginning to learn about energy. Meals will be provided each day.
