Tribal Programs

Grand Portage Tribal Programs consist of multiple programs with the purpose of providing physical, mental, and emotional support to Grand Portage Band members and the community as a whole. These programs include Health Services, Human Services, Community Center, Head Start, Daycare, Elderly Nutrition Program, Food Distribution, Education, and Community Services.

Health Services

Services offered:

  • Doctor/patient appointments onsite
  • Footcare clinics
  • Blood pressure and blood sugar clinics
  • Immunization outreach clinics
  • Transportation to medical appointments out of area
  • Prescription pick-up and delivery
  • Women Infants and Children program (WIC)
  • Massage therapy
  • Chiropractor therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Nutrition Education (SNAP-Ed)
  • Tobacco cessation
  • Family home visiting
  • Community Agriculture through Culture, Health, and Education (CACHE) program

Human Services

Programs include:

  • Indian Child Welfare Act – Case management, supportive services, truancy case monitoring
  • Mental Health – We offer access to Tele-medicine, case management, referrals
  • Domestic Violence/Victim Services – services to domestic violence and sexual assault victims, emotional support, safety planning, weekly women’s group
  • Chemical Dependency – We offer Rule 25’s and a weekly support group.
  • Food Shelf – Available to any one need
  • Employee Assistance Program offered to employees of Grand Portage RTC and Grand Portage Lodge and Casino.

Grand Portage Community Services

Grand Portage Community Services can assist with applying for energy assistance through AEOA as well as providing assistance to community members who may be having trouble paying utilities and are facing shutoffs. These programs are income and need based; for more information or to setup an appointment please call 218-475-2480.

Head Start

Grand Portage Head Start program is a comprehensive early care and education program dedicated to serving low-income families. Head Start currently serves children ages 3 – 5 and their families; providing education, health and nutrition services.

Head Start also provides Home Based services for families with 2 year olds. For enrollment or other questions please contact Head Start at 218-475-2234.

Grand Portage Education and Scholarship Department

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Grand Portage Education and Scholarship Department is to help Grand Portage students attain Secondary and post-secondary success through a tutoring and financial aid program leading to the

achievement of educational pursuits and meaningful contributions to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.  We strive to strengthen, protect and advance the overall education experience and opportunities for American Indian students in our community.

Anishinaabe Academic Center – AAC

Our program provides individual and small group support to Native American students in grades K-12 living in Grand Portage and throughout Cook County as well. The AAC has a dedicated room within ISD166 schools. Support is provided both in the classroom and after the school day ends.  


What services does our program provide?

  • In addition to academic support for small groups in the classroom, individual support can be arranged before and after school. 
  • We provide support for on-line high school credit recovery taken through ISD 166; on-site in Grand Portage and at ISD 166.  
  • We provide academic guidance, college visits, and college applications and will refer students for other needed services when necessary.

Grand Portage Scholarship Program – GPSP 

Our program provides scholarship awards to both band members and direct descendants while they are pursuing their educational and career goals.

  • Networking resources and information about other grants and scholarship availability

Other Programs we offer 

  • We offer a Mentorship Program for students grades 7 to 9th during the summer
  • We sponsor the Summer Camp Program for K to 6th grades.
